Earlier this month App Annie released the App Annie 2017 Retrospective Report. This report compares the top-level indicators like downloads, consumer spending, and time spent in apps with the metrics from the last two years. The year of 2017 was a highly lucrative year for the app economy, which has increased in all of the top indicators. The number of app downloads increased 60 percent to 175 billion downloads globally. Consumer spending has doubled to 86 billion dollars, and the time spent in apps increased 30 percent, meaning the average user spends 43 days per year or 1.5 months per year engaging with apps.
The report showed that the average users has 80 apps on their smartphone, and uses a varying assortment of 40 of those apps each month.
However, these numbers are reflected on a global scale, and this can skew the numbers slightly. A regional outlook can be more useful when targeting a specific area for marketing. A closer look at the metrics by regions show that China has the largest market in the world for apps. In 2017, approximately 200 billion hours were spent on apps. India was the closest to China in usage, but only came in with 50 billion hours. In addition to having the highest app usage in the world, China is also responsible for most of the spending in the app market. The Chinese market produces $1 out of every $4 spent in apps stores. Most of this money goes to Chinese companies, because most of the apps used in China are created by Chinese companies.
The bottom line is the App economy is absolutely booming, and it looks like it will continue to do so. Over the last several years usage, spending, and number of apps downloaded has continued to go up every year. However, different areas of the world will have different metrics.
